The 101st Airborne Division
Nicknamed the “Screaming Eagles”, the 101st Airborne Division was activated on August 16, 1942. It includes the 501st, 502nd and 506th Parachute Infantry Regiments, as well as the 327th and 401st Glider Infantry Regiments. It was commanded in 1944 by Major General Maxwell D. Taylor.
The 101st Airborne fought during Operation Overlord in Normandy (June 1944), Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands (September 1944), and the defense if Bastogne (December 1944 – January 1945). It then went to Haguenau, in Alsace, before capturing the Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden. The 101st Airborne was awarded two Presidential Unit Citations for its bravery, and suffered heavy casualties during the war.
Stationed in France at Camp Mourmelon, near Reims, the division was sent in trucks to defend Bastogne from the German “Wacht Am Rhein” offensive, known as the Battle of the Bulge. It reached the town just before the German forces, and stood its ground with support from the 10th Armored Division and parts of the 28th Infantry Division, fending off both ground and air assaults. The historic moment in the siege of Bastogne was the response given by commander McAuliffe to the Germans' request for surrender: “NUTS!”. The 101st Airborne was eventually saved by General Patton's Third Army.
